Elneny has been strongly linked with the Premier League this month, with several British media outlets reporting that the deal is close to being completed ahead of the transfer window opening on 2 January.

Ahram Online claim to have spoken to the 23-year-old, who they said admitted a medical is complete and a contract about to be finalised.

Elneny, a defensive midfielder with more than thirty senior Egypt appearances to his name, currently plays club football for Swiss champions FC Basel and is likely to cost Arsenal €5-6million.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is keen to strengthen in central midfield following injuries to Santi Cazorla, Francis Coquelin and Jack Wilshere, whilst Aaron Ramsey and Mikel Arteta have also had recent spells on the sidelines.

Elneny was part of the Basel side that defeated Chelsea 1-0 in the group stage of the 2013/14 Champions League.
