PSG look back in Angers demolition

Paris Saint-Germain were less than impressive as they struggled to a 1-0 win in Toulouse just after the winter break. Questions were raised when they edged past the same opponents on Wednesday in the French Cup. The doubters were answered in the most emphatic manner on Saturday night at the Parc des Princes.

Another game, another win. Paris Saint-Germain went 24 points clear at the top of Ligue 1 with a 5-1 deconstruction of Angers.

The Argentina international Angel di Maria bagged a brace in the rout which was gilded by a spectacular team goal.

PSG skipper Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who had opened the scoring, picked up the ball 35 metres out juggled it five times on his right foot before flicking it back to di Maria who guided the ball into the left hand side of the penalty area for Blaise Matuidi. His volleyed centre was swept in over on the right by Gregory van der Wiel. The ball did not touch the ground during the slick interplay.

That made it 3-0 after 54 minutes and though Pierrick Capelle pulled one back for the visitors, that just merely lit the fuse for the di Maria show.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star scored two sumptuous goals in three minutes. The first an instinctive lob over goalkeeper Alexandre Letellier from 25 metres and the second a cultured dink over the stranded keeper.

Angers boss Stephane Moulin said after the game that defeat put into context the 0-0 draw between the sides in Angers in early December. He said that the ambition for his newly promoted team was maintaining its status in the top flight.

“PSG are looking to win the Uefa Champions League,” he added. “It was all too much for us. We paid heavily as they played like champions and we’re not in that league.”

Angers dropped to fifth as a result of the setback while Nice rose to second thanks to a 2-1 win over Lorient. Monaco can reclaim second with at least a draw on Sunday night against Toulouse who are in the relegation zone.
