Lyon ends Paris St Germain's record unbeaten run

Paris St Germain’s remarkable run of victories finally came to an end after Lyon stunned the runaway Ligue 1 leaders 2-1 in Lyon on Sunday night. Goals by Maxwell Cornet and Sergi Darder sealed Lyon’s famous victory over the Paris side which was hoping to become the first French team to avoid defeat for a whole league season.

Going into the match, PSG were on a 37-match unbeaten streak. Their last league defeat came a year ago when they lost 3-2 to Bordeaux. PSG’s hopes of increasing their 23-point lead suffered a blow as the 19-year-old Cornet put Lyon in the lead in the 13th minute.

The goal spurred Lyon on as they toyed with PSG's defence. The home side was soon rewarded as Darder scored the second goal with some deft footwork in first half injury-time.

PSG responded strongly in the second half thanks mainly to Javier Pastore who was replaced Benjamin Stambouli.

Pastore was instrumental in PSG’s only goal of the match as he created space for
Lucas to place the ball just inside the far post.

Lyon could have extended their lead through Jordan Ferri and Rachid Ghezzal, both of whom missed their chances.

Lyon’s fourth win in five games helped them move into the third and final Champions League place.

In other Ligue 1 matches, Monaco were held to a goalless draw by Nantes while Caen beat Saint-Etienne 2-1.

Monaco are eight points clear in second place but the six teams below are separated by just two points.
