France's Hollande prepared to walk 3 miles a day to stay fit

French President François Hollande visited the National Institute of Sport and Physical Education on Tuesday, kitted out with a pedometer - a device which counts one's steps - sparking rumours that he may be on a new diet. The Socialist leader appears to have followed advice about how to keep fit from doctor and TV presenter Michel Cymes.

Michel Cymes "gave us all an objective, and personally I feel concerned," François Hollande told French newspaper Le Figaro on Tuesday.

The presenter of the show "The amazing powers of the human body" had given viewers advice on staying in shape: walk up to 6,000 steps a day or 3 miles.

"If we stick to this objective, we will be able to reduce by half the number of inactive people within the next ten years," the president added, after having paced up and down the grounds of the National Institute of Sport and Physical Education or INSEP.

Hollande has admitted himself that he has put on weight since he came to office in 2012.

Before taking power, he had lost between 10 to 20 kilos - partly thanks to the low-carb Dukan diet but seems to have put it all back on.

On a visit to INSEP to promote the UEFA Euro 2016 soccer tournament throughout France, he took the opportunity to encourage the French population to also be more active. Advice, which if he puts into practice, might get him back into shape before next year's election race kicks off.
