Formula E to electrify City of Light

Parisians will be treated to a spectacle of electric cars zipping around close to 250 km per hour around Les Invalides, one of France’s most iconic landmarks, on Saturday. The French capital is the latest venue on the Formula E championship calendar.

Formula E is regarded as the electric equivalent of Formula 1, which is unarguably the pinnacle of motorsport in terms of the use of cutting edge technology.

The Formula E championship, which started last year, features nine teams and a number of former Formula 1 drivers including defending champion Nelson Piquet Junior, Nick Heidfeld, Jean-Eric Vergne and Bruno Senna.

A special 1.93 km track has been laid out around Les Invalides for the race. Since these cars require smooth surfaces, the sections of cobblestone have been covered with temporary tarmac surfaces.

Before the tarmac was laid, the cobblestones were covered in a film of plastic and sand as a means of protection.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo contends Formula E is a means to dramatically develop electric mobility, essential for our cities.

Besides Paris, other cities which host Forma E include Berlin, London, Beijing, Moscow, Mexico City, Putrajaya, Long Beach, Punta Del Este and Buenos Aires.

There’s a strong French connection to the series in the form of the team Renault e.Dams which is the defending constructors’ champion and current leader in the standings as well as drivers Stéphane Sarrazin, Loic Duval, Jean-Eric Vergne, Sébastien Buemi and Nicolas Prost.
