Leicester inch closer to fairytale title win after draw with Man Utd

Leicester City were held to a 1-1 draw by Manchester United which has put the former’s coronation on hold for some time. They will be crowned as champions if second-place Tottenham Hotspur fail to win at Chelsea on Monday. And even if Spurs win the London derby, Leicester will need just two points from their final two games.

Though playing away, Leicester possessed the motivation and the momentum to collect the three precious points that would complete their season fairytale. However, it was United which struck first in just the eighth minute through French striker Anthony Martial who scored with a right footed shot.

The League leaders took just 10 minutes to equalise as Wes Morgan headed the ball into the net from a free kick by Daniel Drinkwater.

Though both sides pressed hard, none managed to break the deadlock. United came close to taking the lead in the 78th minute when Chris Smalling’s header hit the post from the centre of the box.

Leicester’s evening was marred after Drinkwater was sent off in the 86th minute after being shown his second yellow card of the match.

Leicester, who were 5000-1 outsiders, must wait for a few hours or days to become champions for the first time in their 132-year history.

Swansea shock Liverpool

In the day's other match, Swansea shocked Liverpool 3-1 to steer clear from the relegation zone. A brace by Ghanaian forward Andre Ayew on either side of the half and a goal by Jack Cork helped Swansea retain their place in the Premier League for the next season.

The hosts scored the opening goal in the 20th minute as Ayew headed from close range to the bottom left corner. Cork doubled Swansea’s lead in the 33rd minute through a right footed shot from outside the box.

Liverpool pulled one back in the 65th minute through a Christian Benteke header. However, Swansea put the match out of Liverpool’s reach just two minutes later as Ayew scored his second and his team’s third goal.

The visitors’ woes were compounded after Brad Smith was sent off after being shown his second yellow card of the match.

Liverpool are now in eighth place in the championship standings.
