The unseeded Americans defeated the fifth seeds Timea Babos of Hungary and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-4 to claim their sixth Wimbledon doubles title.
It was their 14th doubles triumph as a team at the majors and their 22nd in 23 finals overall.

"It's awesome to win another doubles at Wimbledon," said Serena.
Venus said: "I never want to make a mistake. I don't want to let Serena down. She brought the energy from the singles on to the doubles court."

The pair had not played competitively together for two years before Wimbledon but reunited as part of their preparations for the Olympic Games next month. The sisters collected their first Wimbledon doubles crown together in 2000, the year that Venus won the first of her five singles titles at the venue.

They added another in 2002 – Serena’s first singles triumph at the All England Club – and the following four victories in 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2016 have all been preceded by a singles triumph for one of the sisters.

In her first outing on Centre Court, Serena served 13 aces and faced only break points as she swept past  the fourth seed Angelique Kerber 7-5, 6-3 in the women's singles final.

It was her 22nd major singles championship allowing to equal the mark of the German Steffi Graf.
