Security will be beefed up for the final stage of the Tour de France which will end with a sprint down the Champs-Elysées in the heart of Paris on Sunday.

Police in Paris have been on a heightened state of alert following the Bastille Day truck attack in Nice that killed 84 people in Nice and the November terror attacks in the French capital.

According to police officials, among the “enhanced” security measures include restrictions on public street access, a crackdown on alcoholic drinks, reduced parking and a ban on fireworks and imitation firearms.

Police also warned they would be checking people's identity and searching bags and vehicles, as well as scouring the entire 113 kilometre route of the final Tour stage from Chantilly just north of Paris.

The three-week long race has been conducted under tight security. Each of the 22 teams of nine riders has been assigned a dozen officers to look after them, while a police command post was set up at the finish of every stage.
