But shortly after the pause, former France international Alou Diarra pulled one back for the hosts. But PSG held on for the victory which puts them four points behind pacesetters Nice who beat Lyon 2-0 on Friday night.

"We struggled to play our best football," said PSG midfielder Blaise Matuidi. "But it’s a positive sign that we can still win when we’re having difficulties."

PSG boss Unai Emery will be pleased with the continuing marksmanship of striker Edinson Cavani. The 29-year-old returned from international duty with Uruguay to fire in his ninth goal of the season for PSG to keep him top of the Ligue 1 scoring charts.

Guingamp climbed to fifth after edging past Lille 1-0. The defeat leaves Lille in the relegation zone with seven points, one ahead of Lorient who lost 2-1 at home to Nantes. Yacine Bammou and Guillaume Gillet scored either side of the break for Nantes. Pierre-Yves Hamel halved the deficit with 10 minutes remaining but Sylvain Ripoll’s men could not find the equaliser.

On Sunday, Marseille have the chance to move clear of the drop zone when they entertain mid table Metz at the Velodrome.
