Inter Milan dismiss coach Frank de Boer

Inter Milan sacked manager Frank de Boer on Tuesday just 85 days into his reign at the San Siro. The 46-year-old Dutchman took over from Roberto Mancini in August after signing a three year contract.

But Sunday’s 1-0 loss at Sampdoria – their fourth defeat in five league games - left the club 12th in the Italian top flight after 11 games.

Youth team coach Stefano Vecchi will take charge of the first team for Thursday’s Europa League game at Southampton.

De Boer, a former Netherlands international, had been closely linked with vacancies at several English Premier League clubs during the summer. But he opted for Italy and Inter following five successful years at Ajax.

He took the Amsterdam giants to four successive league titles and they narrowly lost out to PSV Eindhoven on the final day of the 2016 season.

Following his dismissal, De Boer said on social media that he needed more time to succeed and thanked the Inter fans for their support.

Since Jose Mourinho led them to a treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and Uefa Champions League in 2010, it has been a slough of despond for the Inter diehards.

The side has not claimed the Italian title. After AC Milan won the 2011 championship, Juventus have dominated with five successive Serie A crowns. The first three were acquired during the stewardship of the now Chelsea boss Antonio Conte. Massimo Allegri has overseen the last two triumphs.
