The draw means that City could be dislodged by Arsenal or Liverpool from the top spot when the two teams play their matches on Sunday.

A first-half goal by Sergio Aguero gave City the lead. City didn’t seem to be on the way to cap off a perfect week that saw them hammer Barcelona 3-1 in the Champions League.

However, de Roon denied City three points as he headed a cross from George Friend to score the equaliser in the 91st minute.

City now lead Arsenal and Liverpool by a single point with Chelsea just a point further back.

Arsenal face Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool host Watford while Chelsea face Everton.

In other matches, Burnley beat Crystal Palace 3-2 in a thrilling match that saw Palace stage a sensational comeback only to be denied a deserving draw in the final moments of injury time.

Burnley began the match in great style, scoring the first goal in the second minute thanks to a right footed shot by Sam Vokes. The hosts extended their lead in the 14th minute as Johann Berg Gudmundsson scored from a Vokes’ assist.

Palace struck back in the second half through Connor Wickham who scored in the 60th minute. The visitors levelled the score in the 81st minute after Christian Benteke successfully converted from a penalty spot after Matthew Lowton conceded the spot kick for handling the ball in the penalty area.

Just when it looked Palace had earned a hard fought draw, Burnley scored the winner in the 94th minute through Ashley Barnes.

Meanwhile, ten-man Sunderland came back from a goal down beat Bournemouth 2-1 to score their first win of the season.
