Blatter football ban upheld

The ex-president of Fifa, Sepp Blatter, has had his six-year ban from football upheld following an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The 80-year-old Swiss was suspended because of ethics breaches as his 17-year stint in charge of world football's governing body ended in a corruption scandal last year.

Blatter was found to have made a 1.86-million-euro "disloyal payment" to former Uefa boss Michel Platini.

CAS described the transaction as "an undue gift with no contractual basis".

"No other verdict could be expected," was Blatter's response.

"I must accept the decision. I have experienced much in my 41 years in Fifa. I mostly learned that you can win in sport but you can also lose too."

In its written verdict, CAS said Blatter "requested the annulment of the ban but did not request a reduced penalty".

"In any event, the panel determined that the sanction imposed was not disproportionate."

Fifa banned Blatter and Platini for eight years but the penalties were reduced to six years by its appeals committee.

In May CAS cut Platini's ban to four years following a successful appeal.
