Kohli hit 17 fours as his side reached 451-7 in their first innings reply to England’s tally of 400. "He played exceptionally well and you have to take your hat off sometimes and just accept it," England's Joe Root said of Kohli's pyrotechnics.
"The amount of runs Kohli has scored this series, if you take those away it's a completely different series."

Kohli surpassed 1,000 Test match runs for the year and 4,000 for his career during his 241-ball knock.

The 28-year-old entered the fray early in the morning session at the Wankhede Stadium after Cheteshwar Pujara was bowled for 47 by Jake Ball.

Kohli, who has hit two double centuries in 2016, reached his century midway through the final session. It was his second century of the series after his 167 in the second Test at Visakhapatnam.

Kohli's unbeaten innings came after Murali Vijay completed his century after starting the day on 70. He was eventually out for 136 shortly after lunch. "It's very hard to bowl against guys when they're in that sort of form,” added Root who claimed two of the seven wickets. “They deserved the scores they got.

"The most important thing is that we take those three early wickets when we get the opportunity on Sunday. "Then, when it comes to batting we look to put pressure back on them. If we can do that well then we have a really good game on our hands," added Root.

"Any lead is gold on this wicket," Vijay told reporters. "During the tea interval, we just thought get close to their target but now the way we are batting I think we're in a pretty good position."
