Union officials had warned that Monday could be the worst day yet of the strike.

Flights from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport to Montreal, Los Angeles and Washington, were among those likely to be cancelled, the airline said.

The company has been limiting the number of passengers allowed onto some flights and using planes belonging to other airlines, to try to reduce the impact of the strike.

Management said that less than 30 per cent of cabin crew was on strike, while unions put the figure at more than 50 per cent.

The main unions say they are disappointed that there have been no negotiations, while management insists that it has been open for talks since the beginning of the strike.

Six of the seven unions began the strike in protest against plans to reduce the number of cabin staff, which unions maintain would compromise the safety of passengers.

On Monday two of the smaller unions announced that they were withdrawing from the strike action, having negotiated job guarantees until 2012.

Junior transport minister Thierry Mariani on Monday denounced the strike, calling it “irresponsible” saying it was a threat to the future of the company in which the French state has a 15 per cent stake.

The labour dispute comes after Air-France-KLM reported a first quarter net loss of 197 million euros and warned that the outlook was uncertain for the rest of the year.
