More snow causes traffic havoc in Paris

The French capital woke up to even more snow on Sunday morning, causing the cancellation of buses, flights and trains.

According to Méteo France, up to 10 centimetres of snow fell overnight across large parts of the country, from the south to the east of the country.

In Paris, bus services have been cancelled, leaving major streets largely empty. A tram service to the city’s west has also been cancelled due to snow.

Firefighters evacuated more than a hundred passengers from a metro train when it got stuck just before Gare d'Austerlitz train station by the Seine river.

Forty-percent of flights have been cancelled out of Paris’s two main airports, Chales-de-Gaulle and Orly.

The train service to Charles-de-Gaulle airport has been slowed down. The Orlybus service to Orly has been cancelled, and there are no shuttle buses between terminals at Orly.

Passengers have been asked to check with their airlines before heading to the airport. The airport operator has been posting updates regularly on twitter.

High-speed TGV trains have also been told to slow down. The national train operator, SNCF, says this will delay all trains by 25 to 40 minutes.

Fifty-three departments have been put on high alert, and drivers have been urged to avoid driving because of the snow and ice.

The French Prime Minister, Jean-Marc Ayrault, said electricity has been cut to around 25,000 homes around the country, particularly in the south-west.

Up to 20 centimetres of snow is expected to fall by Monday morning.
