Dressed in a cream-white coat and matching hat, the 88-year-old monarch stepped off the train at the Gare du Nord where she was greeted by cheers from some 300 well-wishers, before being driven away in a black Bentley.

The Queen, the only one of the heads of state invited who actually lived through the Second World War, is to be the guest of honour at the commemoration proceedings.

Her son and heir to Britain’s throne, Prince Charles, arrived two hours earlier in the Normandy town of Bénouville, to meet British veterans of the allied landings. The Queen’s grandson Prince William and his wife Kate will also be present at Friday’s D-Day commemoration ceremonies.

On Saturday, before leaving France, the Queen will meet the new Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo and she will take a walk around a Paris flower market which is to be officially re-named after her.
