Hail and high winds forecast as summer storms hit France Saturday

Hail and winds over 100 km per hour were expected as summer storms hit much of France on Saturday, forecasters said. The first big wave of summer holiday makers were expected to hit the road during the day.

With rain already hitting Limousin and Auvergne in the central mountains and Aquitaine in

the west on Saturday morning, the Météo France weather service advised “special vigilance” in 26 départements.

Summer storms were expected to break at 2.00pm in Alsace and Franche Comté in the east and the Auvergne and the Lyon region during the afternoon with a second wave starting in the south-west and moving east during the evening.

Hail and winds that could be over 100km per hour were expected overnight, finally ending at about 2.00am Sunday.

Traffic monitors Bison Futé issued an orange alert for the Mediterranean coast and the Paris region as the first wave of summer holiday makers were due to take to the nation's motorways.
