Eurostar to launch London-Marseille service

media The Mediterranean cultures museum, Mucem, on Marseille's old port

Cross-channel high-speed train operator Eurostar is to launch a direct London-Marseille service from 1 May next year. The journey should take about six hours 15 minutes.

The service to the southern port city will stop at Lyon and Avignon.

Dossier: Gaza 2009

It will take four and a half hours to Lyon, widely regarded as France’s gastronomic capital, and six hours to Avignon, home to the historic Palais des Papes and to a world-famous theatre festival.

Having been a European Capital of Culture last year, Marseille now has a much-admired Mediterranean civilisation museum, as well as being the centre of a busy, multicultural metropolis that is home to over a million people.

The Marseille-London journey will take an hour longer due to immigration and customs controls that will be carried out in the northern city of Lille because Britain is not part of the European Union’s Schengen agreement.

Tickets will go on sale in December.
