Paris Mayor opens Eiffel Tower's new glass floor

The Mayor of Paris on Monday officially opened a new glass floor on the first level of the Eiffel Tower, increasing the attraction of one of the world’s most visited monuments.

The new floor, made of solid glass, gives tourists the sensation of walking on air as they look down from a height of 57 metres.

Architects Moatti-Rivière designed the floor, and were instructed by the city of Paris, which holds the majority stake in the building, to make sure it is fully accessible to disabled visitors.

Wind turbines and solar panels have been installed to generate some of the tower’s energy and the toilets will operate partly with rainwater.

It’s hoped that the first floor will now become as popular as the viewing platform at the top of the 325-metre tower.

A new display, on seven screens, shows the history of the tower, which is 125 years old.

Over the last two years the Eiffel Tower has undergone a major refit, which cost 30 million euros. It is also repainted every seven years, using 60 tonnes of paint.

Around seven million people visit the Eiffel Tower every year, of whom 87.5 per cent are foreign tourists.
