Air France’s troubled relations with its workforce seemed to improve on Wednesday as pilots voted in favour of plans to develop its low-cost operator Transavia.

The vote follows a strike that saw more than half of the company's flights grounded for two weeks in September and October because pilots objected to proposed contracts and work conditions.

In a sign tensions are still rife, the vote in favour of expanding the low-cost wing scraped by with a slim majority of 53 per cent.

Air France welcomed the vote, which it said would pave the way to multiply the activities of Transavia over the next five years.

The company hopes to compete with Ryanair and Easyjet, which are dominating the French and European low-cost markets.

The deal between the company and its workers is expected to be sealed in writing on Thursday.
