Dallas Eakins, a former Edmonton Oilers coach who has guided a minor-league squad for the past four years, was named on Monday as the new man in charge of the National Hockey League's Anaheim Ducks.

The Ducks fired Randy Carlyle last February and replaced him on an interim basis with Bob Murray but Anaheim missed the playoffs for the first time since the 2011-12 campaign.

Eakins, a 52-year-old American, went 36-63 with 14 overtime losses with Edmonton from 2013-2015.

The past four seasons, he guided Anaheim's top developmental prospects at nearby San Diego of the American Hockey League.

"I am truly humbled," Eakins said. "I look forward to build off that success here in Anaheim."

The Ducks went 35-37-10 this season, finishing 10 points behind Colorado for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Anaheim lost 12 straight games from mid-December to mid-January, a club record, and dropped 19 of 21 before firing Carlyle.

"Dallas is an outstanding head coach who has worked well with our players since joining the organization," Murray said.

"He's a tremendous leader and strategist and deserves this opportunity."
