Federer was joined in the third round by Britain’s Andy Murray who had to come back from two sets down to make it to the last 32.
The 2012 champion defeated Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 5-7, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1.
Murray will face Brazilian 30th seed Thomaz Bellucci for a place in the last 16.
